Sirikata - Open Source Virtual World Platform Launching Soon

I spend a good deal of my time exploring emerging branded virtual worlds from a consumer perspective but recently I ran across a rather compelling open source initiative called Sirikata under development at Stanford University. Those of you familiar with the augmentation and immersion discussions will recognize Henrik Bennetsen as the project contact.

From the wiki:
Sirikata is an BSD licensed open source platform for virtual worlds. We aim to provide a set of libraries and protocols which can be used to deploy a virtual world, as well as fully featured sample implementations of services for hosting and deploying these worlds.

Sirikata is scheduled to open soon (Q1 2009); and it was this teaser that caught my attention.

If you are of the geek variety and/or are following the MMOX discussions in earnest, don't miss this discussion on the architecture.

I'm really looking forward to see how Sirikata plays out in the industry.
